The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions of the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently a study projected his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying large sections of the executive mansion to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.
We moved from 'the humble will receive the world' toward 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of animosity who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding of him because they identify as non-believers or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly definitely not the narrative of a mighty king appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to evade secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his doctrine is about love for other people, specifically for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his crime policy states that when a person pilfers your jacket you should give him your sweater too.
The evident and straightforward truth that the Savior from scripture requests a type of profound affection focused on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith rather a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become heartened to see the persistent defiance against Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided great solace to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.

America is best defended, to put it differently, by reference to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to that which renders it special and beautiful, specifically the model of the Savior.
